Middle School Families:

I often hear students complain about how difficult math is and how they don't like math homework. Not liking to do homework is to be expected from middle schoolers! During the middle school years students are introduced to abstract and more advanced math concepts. If students have not mastered basic math concepts in earlier years, they may find it difficult to keep up in class now. When this happens, students can become anxious and defensive. Their math confidence may decrease.

In order to help your child, listen to understand the root cause of their behavior.  Ask questions to help your child figure out what is confusing, review math assignments, and look online for additional resources. It is important to  encourage your child to focus on the concept rather than the procedure. Finally, partner with the teacher and ask about your child’s progress. Discuss with the teacher how best to support your child at home. When your child sees you partnering with the school, they know they have an ally with their teacher and parent.

Thanks for all you do!
